Scientific Name: Platygyra daedalea

Common Name: Platygyra, Maze Coral, Brain Coral, Closed Brain Coral

Category: LPS - Platygyra

Description: Platygyra are very hardy corals with the classic "brain" pattern and vibrant colors. Often confused with Favia, Favites, and Goniastrea due to a lot of visual similarities, they are differentiated by the absence of protruding paliform lobes above the corallite walls.

In the wild, they are typically found in deeper protected waters, but can be found in almost all reef zones. So, they prefer low water flow with medium lighting. They have very sensitive tissue which can be damaged from high water flow and intense lighting.

Feeding is a major factor for its success. Feeding mostly at night, they love meaty foods like Zooplankton and smaller Mysis/Brine Shrimp target fed directly into its polyps.

Platygyra has long sweeper tentacles (up to 6.5cm) which can sting nearby corals using dense concentrations of nematocysts; the larger the colony, the longer the tentacles. So, its important to give it plenty of place to grow without encroaching on nearby corals. Learn More Here: https://www.int-res.com/articles/meps2004/282/m282p161.pdf

Care and Recommendations:

  • Lighting: Medium (100 PAR) or less recommended.
  • Flow: Mild Flow. High flow should be avoided.
  • Care: Moderate
  • Feeding: At night with all water flow stopped, feeding meaty foods like Zooplankton and smaller Mysis/Brine Shrimp target fed directly into its polyps (in the troughs between the coral ridges) is required.

Note: There is a box fee of $9.99 for all livestock orders applied at checkout (included in the total shipping charges). This includes the insulated shipping box, heat/cold pack (if required), plastic specimen bag, and other materials to ship your frag safely. There is only one box fee per order.
